Amazon, Facebook, LinkedIn, Microsoft amongst others, send comments to MoITT regarding the data bill

All domestic and foreign stakeholders were asked for their opinions on the Personal Data Protection Bill by the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication.

ProPakistani was informed by sources in the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication that the ministry had contacted local and international stakeholders regarding the Personal Data Protection Bill and had gotten feedback from all of them, including tech and business juggernauts like Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and LinkedIn as well as the US Chamber of Commerce and European Union.

After receiving input from all stakeholders, the bill is being reviewed point by point, according to a MoITT official. The Law Ministry will receive the bill after receiving helpful suggestions. The Federal Cabinet will receive the Data Protection Bill following review by the Law Division. Following Federal Cabinet approval, the Bill will be introduced in Parliament.

Individuals and organisations that collect, control, and process data will be subject to this legislation. The bill suggests fines in the event of a data breach. Because of this, the current administration is taking a very cautious approach to this bill, and it is being revised based on its suggestions, the official continued.

The Personal Data Protection Bill 2021 was approved by the Federal Cabinet, which was led by the late Prime Minister Imran Khan, in February 2022, but it was not brought up for discussion and approval in the National Assembly.

For the past four years, the Personal Data Protection Bill has been inactive. The MoITT created the initial draft of the bill in 2018, and a revised version with some changes was introduced in 2020. The Personal Data Protection Bill Consultation Draft 2021 later replaced this draft.
