Leading memory and storage solutions provider, Micron, has unveiled its latest innovation in mobile storage technology with the introduction of UFS 4.0. This advanced storage solution has already been sent as qualification samples to smartphone manufacturers and chipset vendors worldwide, positioning it as a faster alternative to Samsung’s current UFS 4.0 technology.

In simple terms, this means that Android phones are about to get even faster storage, particularly in flagship devices. Micron’s UFS 4.0 enables the production of storage capacities ranging from 256 GB to a whopping 1 TB. While high-volume production is expected to commence in the second half of this year, it may take some time before the first smartphones incorporating Micron UFS 4.0 storage become available to consumers.

The key specifications of Micron’s UFS 4.0 storage showcase its impressive performance. Constructed using 232-layer TLC flash technology, the storage solution allows for the storage of three bits per cell. Micron emphasizes that its six-plane NAND architecture significantly enhances random read throughput, surpassing the performance of previous-generation storage solutions.

In terms of speed, Micron’s UFS 4.0 storage offers remarkable sequential read speeds of up to 4,300 MBps and sequential write speeds of up to 4,000 MBps. These speeds notably outperform Samsung’s UFS 4.0 technology, particularly in terms of write performance. Additionally, Micron’s UFS 4.0 chips deliver a 25% improvement in power efficiency, ensuring more energy-efficient operation. Furthermore, they offer a promising 10% reduction in write latency, resulting in faster data storage and retrieval.

With the introduction of Micron’s UFS 4.0 mobile storage solution, users can look forward to enhanced storage capabilities in their future Android devices. The technology’s impressive speeds, improved efficiency, and higher storage capacities will contribute to a smoother and more responsive user experience. It is anticipated that flagship Android phones incorporating UFS 4.0, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, will hit the market by the beginning of 2024.
