Grand Theft Auto 6 could potentially be capable of running on modern smartphones, according to former Rockstar Games developer Jérémy Hartvick. His comments have renewed discussion about how far mobile hardware has advanced and whether smartphones could eventually handle games that were traditionally limited to dedicated gaming consoles and PCs. Hartvick, who previously worked at Rockstar, discussed the technical possibilities surrounding GTA 6 during an interview with Kiwi Talkz. While he did not suggest that Rockstar is currently developing a smartphone version of the game, he indicated that the hardware available in some modern smartphones could potentially support a game of this scale with the right optimisation and technical adjustments. The comments come as smartphone processors and graphics capabilities continue to improve, allowing mobile devices to run increasingly demanding games. Hartvick referred to the progress made by mobile hardware and pointed to Cyberpunk 2077 as an example of a major PC and console title that has been adapted for high-end mobile devices. The ability to run such technically demanding games on smartphones demonstrates how the performance gap between mobile hardware and traditional gaming platforms has narrowed.
However, running a game and delivering the same experience as a console release are different challenges. GTA 6 is expected to feature a large open world, detailed environments, advanced character and vehicle systems, extensive physics, artificial intelligence and a significant amount of background simulation. Bringing those systems to smartphones would require careful optimisation and potentially substantial reductions in graphical quality, resolution, world density or other resource-intensive features. Hartvick also discussed the possibility of GTA 6 coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and questioned whether such a port would be technically practical. The Switch 2 is considerably more capable than the original Nintendo Switch, but developers still have to account for its hardware constraints when adapting large current-generation games. GTA 6 is being designed around the capabilities of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, meaning a Switch 2 version could require extensive optimisation and compromises. These could involve lower graphical settings, reduced resolution, changes to environmental detail and adjustments to performance targets. Hartvick’s comments represent his own assessment of the technical situation rather than an announcement from Rockstar Games, and Rockstar has not confirmed a Switch 2 version of GTA 6.
The discussion also highlights the broader challenge facing developers as games become more technically sophisticated. Developers increasingly need to consider multiple hardware platforms, each with different processing capabilities, memory limitations and graphics architectures. A game built for high-end consoles may be technically adaptable to another platform, but achieving stable performance while maintaining the intended gameplay experience can require significant development resources. Mobile devices introduce additional considerations, including thermal management, battery consumption, touch controls and the wide range of hardware configurations available across Android and iOS devices. A potential smartphone edition of GTA 6 would therefore involve more than simply reducing graphical settings.
For now, Rockstar Games has officially announced GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while other versions have not been formally confirmed by the company. The possibility of mobile and Nintendo Switch 2 editions remains speculative unless Rockstar provides further details. Nevertheless, Hartvick’s comments offer an indication of how modern hardware is changing expectations around where major AAA games can eventually be played. As smartphones continue to gain processing power and advanced graphics capabilities, the prospect of bringing increasingly demanding console experiences to mobile platforms is becoming more technically plausible, even though individual games may still require extensive development and optimisation.
