Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) has been a constant source of uplifting news lately, not just confined to mountain-scaling feats, but also in substantial human development progress. As reform initiatives resonate through G-B’s education, technology, and entrepreneurship sectors, the region has marked significant strides in nurturing its future generations.

While Pakistan’s public sector reforms have faced hurdles, G-B’s recent successes in education, ICT, and youth-led entrepreneurship stand as a model for effective reform. A convergence of consensus among stakeholders, astute administrative leadership, meticulous planning, and timely execution have contributed to G-B’s achievement.

The ‘smart classroom’ initiative, a flagship project, has propelled technology-enabled education across G-B’s schools. Equipped with advanced IT software parks, chrome books, offline-online Learning Management Systems, and innovative makerspace labs, the region has embraced tech-driven learning. Additionally, G-B has fostered a vibrant business ecosystem through the establishment of software IT parks, nurturing IT start-ups with modern amenities and high-speed connectivity.

Sustainability remains a focus, with plans for capacity building and institutionalization in progress. G-B’s government has collaborated with prestigious engineering university NUST to offer intensive training in sought-after fields like data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain, enhancing participants’ employability.

These achievements underscore a rare occurrence: G-B’s own government spearheading public sector reforms, yielding visible results in a remarkably short span. The impact is palpable, with a renewed spirit evident in both the region’s students and citizens, shaping G-B into a haven not just for tourists, but for the promise of its own people.
