EMSTEEL has delivered hydrogen-based rebar for the construction of Abu Dhabi’s first net-zero carbon mosque, located in Sustainable City on Yas Island. This delivery marks a regional milestone as Aldar becomes the first developer in the Middle East and North Africa to incorporate low-emission, hydrogen-based steel into a large-scale project. The initiative underscores the growing role of sustainable construction materials in aligning with the UAE’s decarbonization goals and advancing environmentally responsible urban development.

The rebar was produced using green hydrogen from EMSTEEL’s pilot project launched last year in collaboration with Masdar. By utilizing this innovative process, the mosque is on track to receive the prestigious LEED Zero Carbon certification, making it a benchmark in the region for energy-efficient and sustainable architecture. The use of hydrogen-based steel represents a significant departure from conventional practices, demonstrating the construction industry’s capacity to adopt low-carbon alternatives without compromising on quality or durability.

Engineer Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating that the delivery highlights EMSTEEL’s commitment to advancing industrial sustainability and accelerating the UAE’s transition toward a low-carbon economy. He noted that the collaboration with Aldar sets a precedent for the future of green steel adoption in residential, commercial, and public infrastructure projects across the country. This strategic partnership demonstrates how local innovation and industrial expertise can contribute meaningfully to the global climate agenda.

The initiative reflects a wider transformation in the construction sector, where demand for sustainable solutions is rising amid growing awareness of environmental impact. The mosque project illustrates how public infrastructure can serve as both a cultural and environmental symbol, blending spiritual significance with ecological responsibility. By prioritizing hydrogen-based materials, the project positions Abu Dhabi at the forefront of integrating climate-conscious technologies into urban development, setting an example for other regional markets seeking to meet national sustainability targets.

With this milestone, EMSTEEL and Aldar are not only supporting the UAE’s broader decarbonization strategy but also reshaping industry standards for future developments. As more projects adopt innovative green technologies, the region is poised to build infrastructure that contributes to climate goals while fostering long-term resilience in construction and energy use.
