 Pakistani Startup Wins Big At World Summit on the Information Society 2019

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prize is a unique international contest for implementing development oriented strategies that leverage the power of ICT. The contest puts special emphasis on achieving the United Nations General Assembly Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The eighth version of WSIS contest was recently held in Geneva, Switzerland from 8th-12th of April 2019. A team from COMSAT’s Incubator Center (Cubator One), also participated in the event. The startup called “FAMBAAH” presented their project “IoT based Smart Home”, in the category 10 ICT Applications: e-Health.

Every project had to go through a detailed examination of three rounds. 1140 nominations were received for the first round of the event for the 10 ICT Applications: e-Health. Out of these, only 20 projects were selected for the second round and 5 projects made it to the final round. The final round was judged by a panel of 5 expert members.

FAMBAAH was able to secure the “Champion of WSIS Prizes 2019” award by competing among the teams from all over the world. On behalf of the team, Dr. Aamir Rashed Chaudhry received the award.

The WSIS Forum is a global United Nations (UN) multistakeholder platform facilitating the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines for advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ITU, UNESCO, UNDP and UNCTAD, work in close collaboration to build the event whereas co-/facilitators and other UN organizations for the same include (UNDESA, FAO, UNEP, WHO, UN Women, WIPO, WFP, ILO, WMO, ITC, UPU, UNODC, UNITAR, UNICEF and UN Regional Commissions).
