China and Pakistan have jointly developed artificial intelligence powered weather forecasting tools aimed at improving early warning systems and enhancing preparedness against climate related disasters, including floods, severe storms, and extreme monsoon weather. According to a report carried by China Economic Net, Chinese and Pakistani meteorologists collaborated to develop specialized forecasting tools by integrating Pakistan’s radar and satellite observations into China’s advanced meteorological platform.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve forecasting accuracy for hazards such as glacial lake outburst floods, monsoon rainfall, and severe storms, which frequently threaten communities across Pakistan. China Meteorological Administration Chief Engineer Pan Jinjun said artificial intelligence has become a key driver in improving hazardous weather forecasting and early warning capabilities, though he noted that further improvements are still needed to enhance the reliability of operational forecasting, even as AI models have demonstrated strong performance in predicting typhoons and other extreme weather events.

The collaboration builds on China’s broader early warning capacity building efforts, which have trained nearly 1,000 meteorological professionals from more than 100 developing countries and regions. The China Meteorological Administration has also launched the MAZU Scholarship to support meteorological experts from Belt and Road partner countries in developing AI based early warning systems. China announced during the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai that it would expand its MAZU AI powered meteorological early warning system to 30 additional countries over the next five years, reinforcing global efforts under the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All initiative.

The cloud based MAZU platform integrates Fengyun meteorological satellite data, AI powered forecasting models, monitoring systems, and impact based forecasting into a single operational framework. Rather than only predicting rainfall or wind speeds, the system assesses potential impacts on transportation, agriculture, energy, aviation, and other critical sectors, enabling governments to make faster and more informed disaster response decisions. The platform is already supporting users in more than 40 countries, with customized versions operating in Pakistan, Ethiopia, Jordan, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Djibouti, and the Solomon Islands. In Pakistan specifically, the system has been adapted using local radar and satellite observations to strengthen forecasting accuracy and disaster preparedness for weather related emergencies, reflecting growing international efforts to combine artificial intelligence, satellite technology, and cross border cooperation to build resilience against climate change in vulnerable regions.
