The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has issued new speed guidelines for electric buses operating in Islamabad, directing drivers not to exceed 40 kilometers per hour within sector areas and 45 kilometers per hour on highways. The advisory follows a series of complaints about speeding that led to at least three non-fatal accidents on various routes, prompting the city’s planning wing to stress the importance of cautious driving. Officials noted that since electric buses are soundless and relatively new to Islamabad’s streets, they require careful handling to avoid mishaps and ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians alike.

The electric bus service is operated by the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), which procured a fleet of 170 electric buses last year as part of efforts to modernize the city’s public transport network. However, due to limited charging capacity at depots, only 120 buses are currently active on approximately 20 routes across the city. CDA officials have said that the gradual introduction of the full fleet reflects a deliberate approach to managing both infrastructure readiness and service demand, ensuring reliable operations while avoiding congestion at charging stations.

To support the growing service, upgrades to depots are underway, including the installation of additional charging panels. Once these upgrades are completed later this month, officials expect the full fleet of 170 buses to be operational. This expansion is anticipated to significantly increase the capacity of Islamabad’s electric bus system, offering commuters more frequent and reliable services across an extended route network.

According to CDA estimates, about 60,000 passengers currently use the electric bus service daily. This figure is expected to rise to around 100,000 once all buses are running and additional routes are fully operational. Authorities believe the enhanced service will not only reduce the city’s carbon footprint but also improve accessibility for thousands of daily commuters. By setting clear speed limits and implementing safety measures, CDA aims to create a more secure and efficient environment for Islamabad’s expanding electric bus network while supporting the broader goal of sustainable and modern urban transport.
