Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has inaugurated the Space Applications and Research Center (SPARC-GB) in Gilgit Baltistan, marking a significant step towards addressing climate-induced challenges in the region.

The SPARC-GB will focus on critical issues such as climate change, glacier melt, and water resource management. The center will leverage satellite-based technology to monitor natural disasters, protect biodiversity, and support sustainable development in the region.

Suparco Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan emphasized the importance of the SPARC-GB in driving innovation and providing cutting-edge solutions to the region’s environmental challenges. He highlighted the center’s role in supporting the local community through employment, capacity building, and development initiatives.

The Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan, Gulbar Khan, acknowledged the critical challenges faced by the region due to climate change and the need for advanced monitoring systems. He urged officials to integrate space technology and work closely with Suparco for regional development.

The inauguration of SPARC-GB was attended by researchers, scientists, environmentalists, and students. The center will serve as a hub for scientific research and innovation, contributing to both local and global advancements in space technology.

With its advanced capabilities, SPARC-GB will provide valuable data on glacier monitoring, landslide risks, and unpredictable weather patterns, ensuring the resilience and safety of local communities.

The center will also collaborate with the Gilgit Baltistan government and international research organizations to address local challenges, including disaster management, ecological conservation, and socio-economic development.

Suparco’s Space Education and Awareness Drive will also be extended to the SPARC-GB, inspiring young minds and offering research opportunities in the field of space technology.
