Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission has indicated that the first day of Ramazan 2026 is likely to fall on February 19, according to a press release issued on Friday. The commission stated that the new moon of Ramazan is expected to be born on February 17 at 5:01 pm. Based on astronomical calculations, the visibility conditions suggest a strong possibility of crescent sighting on the evening of February 18, paving the way for the holy month to commence the following day.

SUPARCO shared detailed observations to support its forecast, noting that the age of the moon at sunset on February 18, 2026 will be approximately 25 hours and 48 minutes. The time between sunset and moonset in coastal areas is projected to be around 59 minutes, a duration considered favorable for visibility. The announcement aligns with an earlier forecast by Pakistan Meteorological Department, which also suggested that Ramazan is likely to begin on February 19. Astronomical data indicates that the crescent should be visible to the naked eye under clear weather conditions, increasing the likelihood of confirmation.

Despite the scientific projections, SUPARCO emphasized that the final decision regarding the commencement of Ramazan rests with the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, the authorized body responsible for moon sighting announcements in Pakistan. The committee evaluates verified testimonies and evidence from across the country before issuing an official declaration. In a related development, Khalid Ijaz Mufti, Secretary General of the Ruet e Hilal Research Council, had earlier stated that the crescent marking the beginning of Ramazan was expected to be sighted on February 18, with Eidul Fitr likely to be observed on March 21 if the month completes 30 days.

Ramazan holds profound spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide. The month is observed through fasting from dawn to sunset, along with increased prayer, reflection, and acts of charity. It is a period dedicated to self discipline, compassion, and community engagement. The observance culminates in the celebration of Eidul Fitr, marking the end of the fasting month and bringing families and communities together in prayer and festivity.
