Stargazers across Pakistan will be able to witness a spectacular celestial display as the first of three supermoons of 2025 lights up the night sky on Tuesday, October 7. According to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the supermoon will reach its peak visibility at 8:47 p.m. Pakistan time, offering skywatchers a rare opportunity to observe one of nature’s most captivating astronomical events. The Moon will rise in the east shortly after sunset and remain visible until just before dawn, setting in the west.
A supermoon takes place when the Moon’s elliptical orbit brings it closest to Earth, making it appear significantly larger and brighter than usual. During this phase, the lunar surface reflects more sunlight, creating a brilliant glow that often appears almost golden near the horizon. SUPARCO reported that the Moon will be approximately 224,599 miles (361,457 kilometers) from Earth during this event—about 6.6 percent larger and 13 percent brighter than an average full moon. For observers in clear-sky regions, the difference will be noticeable to the naked eye, especially during the moonrise.
Adding to the spectacle, SUPARCO noted that Saturn will be visible near the Moon on both Monday and Tuesday evenings. The ringed planet will appear as a bright object in the same region of the sky, enhancing the overall visual experience for astronomy enthusiasts. Observers using telescopes or binoculars will be able to distinguish Saturn’s distinct shape and its faint ring system, providing a memorable experience for those who enjoy night sky observation. The alignment of these celestial bodies makes October 7 an ideal date for amateur astronomers and photographers across Pakistan.
The upcoming supermoon is part of a trio expected before the end of the year. SUPARCO confirmed that the brightest and closest supermoon of 2025 will occur on November 5, when the Moon will be just 221,817 miles (356,980 kilometers) from Earth. This event will be followed by another supermoon in December, rounding off an active season for skywatching communities worldwide. Each supermoon offers a unique view as the Moon’s distance and atmospheric conditions create subtle differences in color, brightness, and apparent size.
The October supermoon will be visible not only across Pakistan but also throughout much of Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. SUPARCO advised astronomy enthusiasts to find open spaces away from city lights for the best view, as light pollution can diminish visibility. With favorable weather conditions expected in several parts of the country, millions of Pakistanis will have the chance to witness the Moon’s striking appearance as it shines brighter and larger than usual. The event is anticipated to draw widespread interest from the public and astronomy groups eager to document one of 2025’s most notable lunar occurrences.
