The Special Technology Zones Authority hosted a delegation from the Shandong Chamber of Commerce Shanghai and the Chinese Enterprise Pakistan Accelerator to discuss ways of bringing Chinese private investment to the Pakistan market. STZA introduced the visitors to its work and to the Special Technology Zones ecosystem, and the introduction was followed by a discussion on investment opportunities. The visit adds to Pakistan’s efforts to attract private sector interest from China into technology focused zones, and it gave the authority a chance to explain the zones to business leaders who may consider investing.
The delegation was led by Gao Hongyan, a former Vice Chairman of China State Construction Engineering Corporation Eighth Bureau and a former Chairman of the Shandong Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Li Gang, Chairman of Hujia Decoration Group and Executive Vice President of the Shandong Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, also took part. Jenssen Chang, Co-Founder of the Chinese Enterprise Pakistan Accelerator and Vice President of the chamber, joined the meeting along with Dr Fazal Rahman, who is Co-Founder of the accelerator and Executive Director of the Pakistan Council on China. Zafar Imran, Founder and CEO of ZiCON Cloud and SABZA, was also part of the group.
The make up of the delegation brings together construction and business leaders from the Shandong Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai with the Chinese Enterprise Pakistan Accelerator, a platform that appears to be focused on helping Chinese companies enter the Pakistani market. The presence of Dr Rahman from the Pakistan Council on China and Zafar Imran from a Pakistani technology company also gave the meeting local representation. STZA did not share details of specific projects, investment amounts or agreements discussed, and described the meeting as an introduction to its work followed by a conversation about attracting Chinese private investment. Without figures or commitments, the meeting is best seen as an early step in building contacts between the authority and the visiting business groups.
STZA thanked the delegation for its visit and said it looks forward to staying connected. The authority works to develop Special Technology Zones in Pakistan, and meetings with investors and business groups from abroad are part of presenting those zones to potential partners. Chinese companies have long been among the largest foreign investors in the country, and the discussion at STZA shows continued interest in finding ways for private firms, and not only governments, to take part in Pakistan’s technology and industrial development. Any further engagement is likely to be announced by STZA after the visit, including whether any of the visiting companies decide to explore projects in the zones.
