Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced the launch of EV taxis and Pink EV taxis by the Sindh Department of Transport, marking the first time these services will be introduced in Pakistan. This initiative aims to modernize public transportation in Karachi, addressing environmental concerns and the need for safer transport services for women.

Earlier in May, Memon had outlined a plan to deploy 200 electric taxis in Karachi, including 50 pink taxis specifically reserved for female passengers. The introduction of these electric vehicles aligns with global trends towards sustainable transportation, reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly urban mobility.

At the launch event, Memon highlighted the objectives of the initiative: enhancing public transportation infrastructure and providing secure services for women. Female drivers will be recruited for the pink taxis, ensuring that women passengers feel safe and comfortable. This step addresses safety concerns and empowers women by creating employment opportunities in the transportation sector.

“The introduction of electric taxis is a significant step towards modernizing our public transport system,” Memon stated. “We are committed to providing safe and affordable transportation options, particularly for women, through our Pink EV taxi service.”

The electric taxis are designed to offer cost-effective transportation solutions, making daily commutes more affordable for Karachi’s residents. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the initiative also aims to tackle the city’s air pollution problem, contributing to a cleaner environment.

The Sindh Department of Transport is setting up necessary charging infrastructure across the city to support the EV fleet. Public response to the announcement has been largely positive, with many lauding the government’s efforts to modernize transportation and address women’s safety concerns.

The launch of EV taxis and Pink EV taxis marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s transportation history, setting a precedent for other cities in the country and showcasing Karachi’s commitment to embracing sustainable and socially responsible practices.
