Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step toward strengthening digital skills across its higher education sector with the launch of a National Cross Disciplinary Curriculum for University Students in Data and Artificial Intelligence by Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority. The initiative aims to equip students from all academic backgrounds with practical foundations in data literacy and responsible use of AI tools to support learning, professional tasks, and informed decision making. The curriculum was officially introduced during the International Conference on Data and AI Capacity Building held in Riyadh, reflecting the Kingdom’s broader efforts to develop future ready talent aligned with its digital transformation goals.

The curriculum is designed to reach all undergraduate students across Saudi universities, regardless of their major, ensuring that every graduate possesses a baseline understanding of data concepts and AI applications. Rather than limiting AI education to computer science and engineering programs, the framework enables institutions to introduce a mandatory course that integrates data and artificial intelligence into all academic pathways. This approach allows students in fields such as business, healthcare, social sciences, and humanities to apply AI driven tools and insights directly within their disciplines. By focusing on real world use cases, practical applications, and ethical considerations, the curriculum promotes responsible technology adoption while building confidence in using digital tools for academic and professional purposes.

The launch took place as part of a collaborative effort involving several key partners. The conference was organized by SDAIA in academic partnership with King Saud University, knowledge partnership with Human Capability Development Program, and strategic partnership with Elm. These collaborations reflect a coordinated national approach to building data and AI competencies at scale. Through shared expertise and institutional support, the initiative aims to standardize core digital skills across the higher education system while allowing universities flexibility in tailoring content to specific academic contexts. The involvement of workforce and technology focused partners also ensures alignment between academic learning outcomes and labor market needs.

Beyond classroom learning, the curriculum emphasizes preparing students for practical application and employment in an increasingly data driven economy. By developing foundational competencies in data analysis, AI assisted decision making, and digital problem solving, graduates are better positioned to contribute to organizations adopting advanced technologies. The program supports Saudi Arabia’s broader human capital development strategy by fostering a workforce capable of leveraging AI responsibly and effectively across sectors. As industries such as healthcare, finance, logistics, and government services integrate intelligent systems into daily operations, having a broad base of AI literate professionals becomes essential for sustained innovation and productivity growth.

Through this national curriculum, SDAIA is reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to embedding advanced digital skills into mainstream education rather than treating them as specialized technical subjects. The initiative reflects a long term vision to build a digitally empowered society where data and artificial intelligence are accessible tools for problem solving, creativity, and economic development. By reaching students early in their academic journeys and across all disciplines, the program lays a foundation for a future workforce capable of navigating and shaping the evolving digital landscape.
