Punjab government has announced a major expansion of its student electric bike initiative, increasing the allocation from 20,000 to 27,200 units and confirming that all female applicants are now eligible to receive bikes. The program, launched earlier this year under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aims to provide students with affordable and sustainable transportation while promoting gender empowerment and environmental responsibility across the province. By widening eligibility and scaling distribution, the government is addressing high demand while ensuring greater access for young women in both urban and rural areas.
According to the Transport Department, the new phase of the program includes both electric and petrol-powered bikes to meet the diverse commuting requirements of students. Orphan students are being prioritized with completely free bikes, while Bank of Punjab has stepped in with financial support to facilitate purchases for 20,000 male and female students under easy installment plans. The scheme’s affordability has been enhanced further by lowering the down payment to Rs. 25,000 and capping monthly installments under Rs. 5,000. This financial model is designed to reduce barriers for students from modest-income households, enabling more of them to take advantage of the program.
Distribution is already underway, with more than 5,000 petrol bikes and 2,000 electric bikes handed over to students. The government has confirmed that another 6,500 electric bikes will be released soon, while more than 15,000 students currently on the waiting list will be accommodated in upcoming phases. Each bike is insured and comes with a two-year service package to ensure durability and reliability. The initiative is also aligned with the CM Green Credit Program, under which students can earn additional incentives of up to Rs. 100,000 for sustainable practices, reinforcing the environmental goals of the scheme.
The eligibility criteria remain focused on students aged 18 to 28, enrolled in recognized educational institutions in Punjab, and holding a valid CNIC along with either a learner’s permit or driving license. Applicants are required to provide supporting documents, including proof of residence and academic certificates. Alongside mobility support, the provincial government has signaled plans to launch complementary academic incentive schemes rewarding high-performing students, thereby linking educational achievement with improved access to transportation.
By expanding the program and making all female applicants eligible, Punjab government is setting a precedent in youth mobility and women’s empowerment. With measures to reduce financial strain, safeguard student riders, and contribute to environmental sustainability, the initiative is positioned as a transformative step for thousands of students. As distribution continues, the scheme is expected to ease commuting challenges, promote inclusion, and strengthen access to education across the province.
