The provincial administration in Punjab has imposed an immediate ban on outdoor drone flying across the province, citing concerns related to public safety and the maintenance of law and order. In a notification issued by Punjab Home Department on Wednesday, authorities stated that the unregulated use of unmanned aerial vehicles poses potential risks to public peace, security and the smooth performance of official duties. The restriction has been enforced under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, and will remain in effect for a period of 30 days from the date of issuance unless withdrawn earlier.
According to the official notification, the administration determined that there were sufficient grounds to take preventive action in order to avoid any untoward incidents. The document noted that outdoor drone activity could lead to obstruction of official operations, create law and order challenges and disturb the general atmosphere within the province. It further emphasised the need to safeguard people as well as sensitive installations and buildings from potential threats. By invoking Section 144, the government has sought to restrict activities that it believes may disrupt public peace or compromise the safety of lives and property.
The ban applies specifically to outdoor drone operations and does not extend to limited indoor use under defined conditions. Punjab Home Department clarified that small drones may still be used for coverage of indoor activities such as events held in halls or marquees. However, responsibility for ensuring safe and confined use within such premises will rest with the event organisers. Authorities have underscored that even in indoor settings, operators must exercise caution and adhere to safety considerations to prevent accidents or disturbances.
The notification also exempts intelligence and law enforcement agencies from the restriction, allowing them to continue drone operations in the course of official duties. This exemption reflects the continued reliance of security agencies on aerial surveillance tools for operational and investigative purposes. The temporary nature of the order suggests that the provincial administration will review the situation before deciding whether to extend or lift the restriction. As drone usage becomes increasingly common for commercial filming, event coverage and recreational purposes, regulatory oversight remains a key concern for authorities seeking to balance innovation with public safety considerations across Punjab.
