The National Database and Registration Authority has unveiled a revamped system for issuing B-Forms the official identification documents for children in Pakistan introducing a structured, three-stage approach that ties each document to a specific phase of a child’s development and progressively incorporates stronger biometric security features as the child grows. The updated process replaces the previous single-document model and is designed to ensure that identification records remain current, accurate, and appropriately secured throughout a child’s early years, both within Pakistan and for families based abroad.
Under the new framework, the first B-Form is issued at birth without a photograph and remains valid until the child reaches three years of age. The second B-Form, applicable from age three to ten, includes a photograph and is renewed at the end of that window. The third and final B-Form, valid from age ten until the child turns eighteen, incorporates a photograph alongside biometric data in the form of an iris scan and fingerprints — bringing child identification progressively in line with the biometric standards applied to adult documents. Each form carries its own distinct validity period, and parents are required to register their child’s birth at the local Union Council within one month of birth in order to obtain the initial document. Subsequent renewals must be completed promptly at the conclusion of each validity window.
The National Database and Registration Authority has made the renewal and registration process accessible through two channels: in-person visits to the nearest NADRA office, and the Pak-ID mobile application, which allows parents to manage documentation from home without the need to visit a physical centre. The introduction of the digital application pathway is particularly significant for families in remote areas or residing overseas, where access to NADRA offices may be limited. The updated system reflects a broader institutional push toward maintaining more rigorous, lifecycle-aware identity records for Pakistan’s youngest citizens — addressing gaps that have long existed in how child identification has been managed and updated as children age through different developmental stages.
