The Punjab government has extended its public digital infrastructure by launching free Wi-Fi service in Rahim Yar Khan, further expanding the province’s efforts to offer accessible internet across multiple districts. This latest rollout is part of a broader initiative to improve digital connectivity in public spaces and support everyday communication needs for citizens. The new hotspots in Rahim Yar Khan are now active at high-traffic areas including Adda Khanpur, City Pull, School Bazaar, the railway station, Jail Chowk, and Hospital Chowk. The coverage area spans from Dari Sangi to Chak No 72-PN, providing a consistent internet connection to students, commuters, and local residents.
Overseen by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, the free Wi-Fi initiative is aimed at enabling greater inclusion in digital services by reducing connectivity barriers. Rahim Yar Khan joins a growing list of cities in the province where similar services have already been implemented. The list includes Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, Attock, Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree. In total, more than 270 Wi-Fi access points are now operational across 11 districts, with Lahore accounting for over 200 of those.
The service, however, comes with clear usage parameters. It is designed to facilitate essential digital access like browsing, communication, and academic support. It is not intended for emergency communication, video streaming, or high-bandwidth entertainment, ensuring that the bandwidth remains evenly distributed and accessible to a larger number of users. The system infrastructure prioritizes functionality in daily routines such as job applications, online learning, navigation, and general browsing.
According to data provided by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, more than 13 million users have accessed the free Wi-Fi service since its inception, consuming more than 265 terabytes of data to date. This demonstrates a substantial public demand for internet access in urban and semi-urban environments. The continued expansion reflects a strong public response to the program and growing dependency on digital tools for routine activities.
The initiative is part of a wider digital transformation agenda being pursued under the direction of the Chief Minister of Punjab. The government has emphasized the role of public internet access in bridging the digital divide and enabling citizens to interact more efficiently with both public and private services. By deploying digital infrastructure at scale, the provincial administration aims to position Punjab as a digitally inclusive province where connectivity is treated as a public utility.
With Rahim Yar Khan now part of the network, the ongoing digital connectivity program continues to reinforce Punjab’s push toward integrating technology into everyday governance and public service delivery.
