Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued a renewed advisory urging mobile phone users across Pakistan to ensure that their SIM cards are registered strictly in their own names, cautioning that the use of SIMs registered against someone else’s identity constitutes a violation of applicable telecom laws. The regulator highlighted that improper SIM registration practices continue to pose compliance and security concerns within the national telecommunications ecosystem.
In its official statement, PTA clarified that any SIM found operating under a name other than that of its actual user falls outside the boundaries of permitted usage. According to the authority, all activity conducted through a SIM, including voice calls, text messages, and data consumption, is legally attributed to the individual whose identity is linked to the registration record. As a result, the registered user bears complete responsibility for any misuse, unauthorized activity, or regulatory breach carried out through that connection, regardless of who is physically using the SIM at the time.
PTA emphasized that mobile subscribers must take personal responsibility for safeguarding their SIMs and ensuring that their telecom connections are not shared, transferred, or used in an unregulated manner. The authority reiterated that consumers are required to comply with all relevant rules and frameworks governing telecommunications services in Pakistan. Failure to follow these requirements may trigger enforcement measures in response to violations, reinforcing the importance of lawful usage and accurate subscriber information in national databases. PTA noted that responsible SIM ownership plays a key role in maintaining transparency and accountability within telecom networks.
Beyond individual compliance, PTA also called on telecom users to contribute proactively to the overall security, stability, and reliability of Pakistan’s telecommunications system. The regulator stated that responsible conduct by subscribers supports a safer digital environment and helps service providers and regulators maintain effective oversight of communications infrastructure. By ensuring SIMs are registered correctly and used ethically, consumers can assist in reducing misuse risks and strengthening trust across the telecom sector.
The advisory reflects PTA’s broader efforts to promote lawful usage of telecommunications services while encouraging citizens to understand their obligations as registered subscribers.
