Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has advised mobile users to use appropriate network settings on their phones and make effective use of Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi Calling, and Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) to improve their calling and mobile internet experience. According to PTA, consumers who notice unclear voice quality during calls or delays in connecting 4G calls should check the network settings on their phones and switch on the 4G option, known as Long Term Evolution (LTE), if it is not already active. They should also make sure that both the handset and the SIM card support 4G services. The advisory follows an awareness message PTA put out in the days before on Wi-Fi calling for places where mobile signals are weak or unavailable.
VoLTE is described as an important feature for better calling because it carries voice calls over a 4G network, which can improve voice quality and help calls connect faster. To benefit from it, the phone, the SIM, and the mobile operator must all support VoLTE, so enabling the setting alone does not guarantee that the service will work. PTA urged consumers to turn on VoLTE in their phone settings, noting that the facility depends on the handset supporting a 4G network, which means users with older or entry-level devices may find the option missing.
Wi-Fi Calling and VoWiFi are aimed at locations where mobile signals are weak, such as inside homes or in basements. These facilities let consumers make calls over a Wi-Fi connection, provided their phone and operator support VoWiFi, and users need to enable the Wi-Fi Calling option in their phone settings and connect to a Wi-Fi network. PTA said availability and use of these services depend on compatibility between the phone and the relevant operator, and it asked consumers to contact their operator for details on availability, activation, and use. Operators have started offering the service. Jazz says its Wi-Fi calling, branded JazzFi, is available across Pakistan at no extra charge on compatible handsets, and it advises users to turn on both Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE because an ongoing call can drop if Wi-Fi is lost while VoLTE is disabled. Telenor Pakistan launched VoWiFi in December 2025.
The advisory is guidance rather than a new rule, and it arrives while PTA is under pressure over service quality. Parliamentary committees have pressed the regulator on poor mobile service, and PTA has recently fined Telenor, Pakistan Telecom Mobile Limited, and Zong a combined Rs145.833 million for failing to meet quality of service standards. Telling subscribers to adjust their own settings can fix some everyday call problems, particularly indoors, but it does not address weak coverage or network congestion, which remain the operators’ responsibility. How much difference the advice makes will depend on how many consumers have compatible handsets and whether their operators have switched on VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling for their numbers.
