The University of Karachi has highlighted the role of modern food technologies and scientific research in reducing food waste and improving food security in Pakistan. The Department of Food Science and Technology organised a seminar titled “World Food Day 2026: Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow” on October 15, bringing together experts to discuss technology-driven approaches to food preservation, agricultural waste utilisation and sustainable food production.

During the seminar, experts highlighted the need for improved cold-chain infrastructure, modern drying techniques, safe packaging and food-testing methods to minimise losses across the food supply chain. Cold-chain systems help maintain suitable temperatures during the storage and transportation of perishable products, while advanced drying and packaging methods can extend shelf life and preserve food quality. Wider adoption of these technologies could help address storage challenges and reduce losses between farms and consumers.

FAO Pakistan Program Coordinator Botagoz Nartayeva also discussed the potential of converting agricultural waste into useful industrial materials. One example involved the use of discarded banana plant parts in the textile industry, illustrating how agricultural by-products can serve as alternative raw materials. Such approaches align with circular economy principles, in which waste materials are reused to create value and reduce pressure on natural resources.

The seminar further emphasised the importance of combining farmers’ local knowledge with scientific research to develop solutions suited to Pakistan’s agricultural conditions. Better food-testing methods, improved processing facilities and more efficient supply chains could support food safety and reduce unnecessary waste. The discussions highlighted opportunities for collaboration among universities, researchers, farmers and industry to translate food science research into practical applications. However, no specific technology deployment or formal implementation project was announced at the seminar.
