Mobile phone users in Pakistan are unlikely to experience an immediate increase in mobile data costs when commercial 5G services become available, as telecom operators are expected to introduce the next generation network through their existing prepaid and postpaid data packages during the initial rollout. According to official documents issued by PTA, customers using 5G compatible smartphones within areas covered by 5G networks will be able to access the new service without subscribing to separate 5G packages. The approach is intended to encourage wider adoption of 5G technology by allowing users to experience enhanced mobile connectivity through their current data bundles.
According to PTA, Cellular Mobile Operators have indicated that the initial pricing strategy for commercial 5G services will remain aligned with existing mobile broadband packages to support mass adoption across the country. During the early deployment phase, users with compatible devices and active 4G SIM cards will be able to connect to 5G networks without replacing their SIM cards, provided they are located within areas where the service is available. PTA explained that operators are expected to maintain current pricing structures in the beginning, reducing barriers for customers who want to transition to the new network. However, the regulator also noted that operators may introduce premium 5G packages in the future as network investments increase and demand for advanced mobile services continues to grow. Future pricing decisions may reflect the costs associated with spectrum acquisition, infrastructure expansion, and network modernization required to support nationwide 5G deployment.
PTA further highlighted that Pakistan’s mobile network infrastructure is already demonstrating the capability to support advanced broadband services. During recent quality of service assessments conducted using Rohde and Schwarz testing equipment, average 5G download speeds reached 135.42 Mbps on Ufone, 133.65 Mbps on Jazz, and 108.66 Mbps on Zong. These performance results indicate that operators have made significant progress in preparing their networks for commercial 5G deployment. The regulator believes that maintaining affordable pricing during the initial rollout could encourage greater consumer adoption while allowing operators to gradually expand coverage and enhance service quality as deployment continues across different regions of the country.
Alongside network readiness, PTA has emphasized that affordable smartphones will play a critical role in the successful adoption of 5G services. The authority has urged the government to review taxes and duties imposed on mobile handsets, stating that high device prices continue to limit smartphone accessibility for many consumers. According to PTA, reducing the cost of compatible smartphones would help accelerate broadband expansion, improve digital inclusion, and support connectivity in rural and low income communities. With local manufacturing of 5G enabled smartphones increasing and telecom operators continuing preparations for commercial deployment, Pakistan’s telecom sector is steadily advancing toward the launch of next generation mobile services while focusing on affordability, accessibility, and broader consumer adoption.
