Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has officially licensed nine local companies to provide Virtual Private Network services under its Class License for the Provision of Data Services, marking a significant step in regulating secure remote connectivity across the country. The move allows Alpha 3 Cubic, Zettabyte, Nexilium Tech, UKI Conic Solutions, Vision Tech 360, Qybitz Solutions, Dynamic Networks, Redtone Telecommunications, and Nexlinx to operate as authorized VPN service providers. PTA has made details about the application process, eligibility requirements, and licensed operators publicly accessible on its website, ensuring transparency and clarity for interested users.

To facilitate regulated VPN usage, PTA has introduced a dedicated VPN Registration Portal. The platform allows organizations, software houses, banks, call centers, embassies, and freelancers to register their VPN services online, providing secure access and compliance with national regulations. Applicants are required to submit details such as CNIC, company information, VPN specifications, and IP addresses. Freelancers may register by presenting evidence of active work, such as project-related emails or letters from employers. Those needing a fixed IP address can obtain one from any PTA-licensed internet service provider. The registration process is free, and approvals are typically issued within eight to ten working hours, highlighting PTA’s focus on accessibility and efficiency.

Since the launch, over 30,000 entities and freelancers have successfully registered, reflecting the growing demand for secure remote connectivity in Pakistan’s IT and freelance sectors. PTA emphasized that the initiative not only enables safe remote work but also ensures regulatory compliance and strengthens the credibility of digital operations. By formalizing VPN usage, the authority seeks to prevent unauthorized access and promote transparency in digital communication channels. The licensing system provides a framework for secure and accountable VPN usage across businesses and individual professionals in the country.

In addition to VPN licensing, PTA has implemented the IP Whitelisting Regulations, 2024, requiring license holders and subscribers to register their IPv4 or IPv6 addresses through a dedicated portal. The regulations aim to improve network security, curb grey telephony, and regulate lawful VoIP services. Applications under the IP Whitelisting Regulations are processed within two to three working days, with non-compliant requests rejected to prevent misuse. This dual approach of VPN licensing and IP registration underscores PTA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity infrastructure, regulate digital services, and support secure and reliable connectivity for businesses and individuals across Pakistan.
