The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a temporary shutdown of its Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) as it prepares to deploy a major system upgrade designed to improve mobile device registration services across the country. The scheduled maintenance is part of the authority’s efforts to introduce an upgraded in-house platform that will streamline device registration, enhance system performance and provide a more efficient experience for both individual users and commercial entities. The upgrade reflects PTA’s continued investment in strengthening Pakistan’s digital telecom infrastructure while improving regulatory services.

According to the announced schedule, the DIRBS portal and all related online services will remain unavailable from 5:00 PM on July 3 until 4:00 AM on July 6. During this maintenance window, users will not be able to register mobile devices, verify IMEI numbers or access other DIRBS-related services. The temporary suspension will affect both individual consumers and businesses that rely on the platform for device registration and compliance processes.

PTA has advised users to complete any pending mobile device registrations and verification requests before the scheduled downtime begins to avoid inconvenience. Once the upgraded platform becomes operational, the authority expects the new system to simplify registration procedures while delivering improved reliability, security and overall performance. The in-house development is also expected to strengthen backend operations and support more efficient management of Pakistan’s mobile device registration framework.

DIRBS plays a critical role in Pakistan’s telecom ecosystem by identifying compliant mobile devices, blocking non-compliant or smuggled handsets and ensuring imported devices are properly registered before accessing local mobile networks. As smartphone usage continues to grow and digital services become increasingly important, maintaining a robust and efficient registration platform has become essential for regulatory compliance and consumer protection. PTA believes the latest upgrade will further modernize the system and enhance the overall experience for mobile users across the country.
