PTA Advises Mobile Users To Use Wi-Fi Calling To Stay Connected In Areas With Weak Signals

PTA has advised mobile phone users to use Wi-Fi calling to stay connected in areas where mobile signals are weak or unavailable. In an awareness message, the regulator highlighted Wi-Fi calling, which is also known as Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), as an alternative for making calls when traditional mobile network coverage is poor. The message pointed to homes and offices as places where this problem is particularly common, since indoor spaces can reduce the strength of the signal that reaches a phone. By drawing attention to the option, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority wants users to know that a call does not have to fail only because the cellular network is not reaching the place where they are standing.

The technology allows users to make calls through an available Wi-Fi internet connection instead of relying on conventional mobile network signals. In practice, this means that a person who has access to a Wi-Fi network at home or in an office can place a call through that connection when the signal from the mobile network is not good enough. The regulator also made clear that the service has limits, since it is available only on supported devices and through mobile operators that offer the facility. A user whose phone does not support the feature, or whose operator does not provide it, will therefore not be able to make calls in this way, even when a Wi-Fi connection is available.

For those who wish to try the service, the PTA advised users to check the settings of their phone for the Wi-Fi calling option and to activate it if it is available. Once the option is enabled, users can connect to a Wi-Fi network and make calls in areas where cellular coverage is weak. The authority also recommended that users contact their mobile operators to confirm whether the service is supported and to learn how to activate it. This step is important because support depends on the operator as well as on the phone, so the settings menu of a device is only one part of finding out whether the feature can be used.

The PTA also noted that the availability and effectiveness of Wi-Fi calling depend on the device of the user, the mobile operator and the internet connection. This means that the quality of a call made through the service will vary from one user to another, since a weak internet connection can affect a call in the same way that a weak mobile signal does. The awareness message therefore presents Wi-Fi calling as a practical option for users who struggle with coverage indoors, while making clear that its results depend on these three factors, and it encourages users to check with their operators before relying on the facility.
