PTA and the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication have successfully activated 5G support on iPhone 17 series devices in Pakistan, marking a notable achievement in the country’s post-spectrum-auction 5G rollout. The activation is particularly significant because Apple maintains a strict global policy that typically delays 5G enablement on its devices in any new market by approximately one year following the issuance of local 5G licenses. Through direct negotiations and coordination between PTA and the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Pakistan has managed to bypass that standard delay, giving iPhone 17 users immediate access to 5G connectivity in areas where the network is already live.
The activation aligns with the broader 5G rollout that is now active across 22 cities in Pakistan, with Islamabad’s sectors including F-8 already recording speeds of around 100 Mbps during field tests. iPhone 17 series users located within active 5G zones can now enable 5G connectivity on their devices, with telecom carriers expected to push official carrier settings updates to eligible devices over the coming days to ensure the transition is smooth and consistent across all three operators that hold 5G spectrum licenses in Pakistan. Users should check for and accept any pending carrier update notifications on their devices to ensure 5G is fully enabled.
There is, however, a notable limitation in the current phase of the activation. PTA officials confirmed that the 5G enablement at this stage applies only to the iPhone 17 series and newer models. Users with iPhone 16 or older Apple devices will need to wait for an additional round of activation, with officials stating that enabling 5G on legacy iPhone models will require some additional time beyond the current phase. The distinction between the iPhone 17 series and older models in terms of 5G readiness is likely linked to the specific 5G band configurations supported by each generation of Apple hardware and the carrier agreement requirements associated with Pakistan’s newly allocated spectrum bands.
The speed at which PTA and the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication secured 5G activation on iPhones ahead of Apple’s standard timeline reflects a more proactive approach to spectrum management and device ecosystem readiness than Pakistan has historically demonstrated in previous technology transitions. For the country’s substantial base of iPhone users, particularly those in Islamabad and the other 21 cities where 5G is now confirmed as active, the development means that the benefits of the long-awaited 5G rollout are now accessible on Apple hardware without the year-long wait that has been the norm in other markets where Apple has applied its standard activation policy.
