PM Shehbaz Targets $25B IT Exports, 5G Rollout to Boost Digital Pakistan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the federal government’s commitment to achieving a target of $25 billion in IT exports over the next three years, with hopes for the swift introduction of 5G internet services in Pakistan. Prime Minister emphasized that the government is actively working to develop and promote the telecommunication sector. He underscored the importance of launching 5G technology to provide faster and more reliable internet services, which he believes will significantly contribute to realizing the vision of a Digital Pakistan.

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz highlighted the critical role of the telecom sector in advancing a cashless and digital economy, expressing Pakistan’s readiness to collaborate with the private group to boost efforts in Information Technology, digitization, and artificial intelligence. The delegation acknowledged the government’s initiatives toward economic stability, recognizing Pakistan’s growing significance as a favorable destination for investment in the IT and telecom sectors.

Meanwhile, PTA has received 11 expressions of interest from various reputed consulting firms for advisory services on the release of the IMT (International Mobile Telecommunications) spectrum, aimed at enhancing next-generation mobile broadband services in the country. PTA invited bids through national and international media advertisements, with the expressions of interest opened on July 15, 2024, at PTA headquarters.

The shortlisted firms will receive requests for proposals to provide professional analysis and advisory services to the Government of Pakistan for the upcoming 5G/IMT auction process. This consultancy will include stakeholder consultations and strategic guidance to ensure a transparent and competitive auction, minimizing collusion and promoting fair competition. 

The government’s push for 5G technology is seen as a vital step toward accelerating digital transformation, enhancing connectivity, and positioning Pakistan as a regional leader in tech innovation and investment.
