The PlayStation 6 pricing conversation has taken on renewed urgency following Sony’s announcement of sweeping price increases for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, effective April 2, 2026. Against that backdrop, well-known AMD leaker KeplerL2 has weighed in with an estimate that, while not entirely reassuring, at least keeps the door open for a sub-$700 launch price. According to the leaker, a $699 price for the PlayStation 6 is still possible despite a bill of materials estimated to be above $750, if Sony goes the extra mile to keep the price as low as possible through a hardware subsidy. The leaker’s estimate specifically assumes a configuration featuring a 1TB Generation 5 solid-state drive with no disc drive, mirroring the direction Sony has already taken with the PlayStation 5 Pro.
The critical caveat, however, is whether Sony will even bother with such a subsidy. “The question is if Sony will even bother now that Xbox is not direct competition anymore,” KeplerL2 noted, pointing to the shifting competitive landscape. With Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox, Project Helix, targeting a very different market segment at an estimated price range of $1,000 to $1,500, Sony finds itself in an unusual position where the traditional pressure to match a rival’s price point no longer applies in the same way. In a situation close to a monopoly, with Nintendo operating in a different space, selling hardware at a loss may be a significantly less attractive proposition for Sony than it has been in previous console generations.
Industry analysts have been more pessimistic in their projections. Kantan Games chief executive Dr. Serkan Toto has stated that a $999 minimum price for one of the PlayStation 6 configurations is a very possible scenario, given the new price of the PlayStation 5 Pro now sitting at $900 following its latest price increase. The ongoing RAM crisis, driven by artificial intelligence data centres consuming large quantities of memory and causing consumer RAM manufacturers to halt sales, has been cited as a key factor behind both the current price increases and the console’s potential launch delay, with Bloomberg reporting in February 2026 that Sony is considering pushing back the PlayStation 6 debut to 2028 or even 2029. Alderon Games founder Matthew Cassells has separately warned that a high price point could make it difficult for Sony to convince PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro owners to upgrade, potentially triggering a prolonged cross-generation period that holds back the capabilities of next-generation titles for years after launch.
