Local manufacturing and assembly of mobile handsets in Pakistan have surged in the first seven months of 2024, outpacing imports significantly.

According to official data, 18.95 million mobile handsets were manufactured or assembled locally during this period, compared to just one million imported commercially. In July alone, local production reached 1.61 million units, while imports totaled 0.16 million.

Of the locally manufactured handsets, 6.85 million were 2G devices and 12.1 million were smartphones. The data shows that smartphones now account for 62% of mobile devices in Pakistan, while 2G devices make up 38%.

Despite a slight decline in mobile phone imports in July 2024 compared to the previous year, the overall imports for the fiscal year 2023-24 reached $1.898 billion, representing a significant increase of 233%.

The growth in local mobile phone manufacturing is a positive sign for Pakistan’s economy and could contribute to job creation and technology development.
