Pakistan’s telecom sector has entered the early deployment phase of next generation connectivity as operators begin activating 5G infrastructure following the recent spectrum licensing. Major players including Jazz and Zong have collectively brought more than 300 5G sites online, signaling the start of commercial rollout in select urban areas. The development follows the 2026 spectrum auction conducted by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, which enabled operators to begin launching services across key frequency bands.
Initial deployment has been concentrated in high priority locations, particularly in Islamabad and other major cities, where network demand and infrastructure readiness are strongest. Reports indicate that Jazz has activated around 177 sites while Zong has deployed approximately 150, forming the bulk of currently operational 5G infrastructure. This phased rollout reflects a strategy focused on testing performance, optimizing coverage, and ensuring network stability before wider expansion. At the same time, telecom operators are continuing to invest in additional infrastructure to support scaling efforts in the coming months.
From a technology standpoint, the rollout highlights the importance of spectrum allocation and infrastructure investment in enabling high speed connectivity. The recent auction made multiple frequency bands available, including 700 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3500 MHz, each playing a different role in balancing coverage and speed. These spectrum assets form the backbone of 5G networks, allowing operators to deliver faster data speeds, lower latency, and improved network capacity compared to previous generations.
While the activation of 300 plus sites marks a significant milestone, industry observers note that the rollout remains in its early stages. Broader adoption will depend on factors such as expansion of site infrastructure, availability of compatible devices, and continued investment in fiber backhaul and network optimization. As deployment progresses, the focus is expected to shift toward expanding coverage beyond major cities and enhancing user experience, positioning 5G as a key enabler of Pakistan’s digital economy.
