Dr. Maheera Ghani, a Pakistani materials scientist and advocate for women in science, has been named in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2026 list, joining an elite group of young achievers recognised across the Asia-Pacific region for their contributions to healthcare, scientific research, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education. Dr Ghani completed her doctorate in materials science from the University of Cambridge and is currently working on postdoctoral research involving ultra-thin semiconductors, with her research focusing on advanced materials and technology that could contribute to future scientific and healthcare developments. Her inclusion in the Forbes list places her among a cohort of some of the most impactful young professionals in Asia, and represents a significant milestone for Pakistan’s scientific community on the international stage.

Alongside her academic work, she leads WinSci Pakistan, an organisation that supports innovation and encourages greater participation of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields across Pakistan. WinSci Pakistan has become an important platform for connecting young women with research opportunities, mentorship, and visibility within scientific communities both domestically and internationally, addressing a persistent gap in the representation of women within Pakistan’s science and technology ecosystem. Through the organisation, Dr Ghani has worked to shift the cultural and institutional barriers that continue to limit the number of women pursuing careers in research and advanced technical fields in the country.

Her efforts in science and education have received international recognition over the years. She was previously honoured with the Nature Inspiring Women in Science Award for her work in motivating young girls to pursue careers in STEM and helping create opportunities for women in scientific research. The Nature award, recognised globally within academic and research circles, had already established Dr Ghani as a prominent voice on gender inclusion in science before this latest Forbes recognition further amplified her profile. Both honours together reflect a track record of impact that spans both the laboratory and the broader mission of making science more accessible and representative.

The inclusion of Dr Maheera Ghani in the Forbes list is being seen as an important achievement for Pakistan’s scientific community, with many observers noting that her success highlights the growing role of young Pakistani researchers making an impact at the international level. Her journey continues to inspire students and young professionals interested in science and innovation, with her contributions to research, education, and the advancement of women helping promote a stronger culture of scientific learning and technological development in Pakistan and beyond.
