Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan advanced Pakistan’s trade agenda during a full day of strategic engagements in Birmingham, part of his official visit to the United Kingdom. The discussions focused on creating stronger commercial links, unlocking new market segments, and enhancing Pakistan’s export footprint in key UK sectors.
During a detailed session with the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, the Minister highlighted Pakistan’s export readiness and its ability to align with the UK’s evolving industrial needs. He noted the positive trend in trade volumes between Pakistan and the Midlands, while emphasizing the country’s growing capacity in value-added sectors such as processed foods, pharmaceuticals, leather products, IT services, furniture, ceramics, and sports goods. He encouraged the business community in Birmingham to explore premium Pakistani offerings, including Basmati rice, mangoes, and halal-certified processed foods.
The Minister also positioned Pakistan as a competitive partner for Birmingham’s advanced manufacturing and automotive industries. Citing Pakistan’s capabilities in cost-efficient production, light engineering, and metal fabrication, he shared the country’s track record in supplying components to global automotive brands. He stressed that Pakistan’s role in the automotive supply chain could be further strengthened through collaboration with UK stakeholders.
Expanding the conversation to innovation and sustainability, the Minister pointed to opportunities under Pakistan’s National Electric Vehicle Policy. He identified areas such as battery systems, electric drivetrains, and green mobility technologies where mutual cooperation could thrive, particularly with Birmingham’s ongoing transition towards low-emission transportation.
A visit to Birmingham City Football Club allowed the Minister to engage in dialogue on Pakistan’s sports manufacturing industry. He observed community outreach initiatives and highlighted Pakistan’s global leadership in producing quality football equipment used by major leagues around the world.
Further strengthening food trade relations, the Minister visited Nouvo, a prominent UK-based food distribution company. He met key retailers and distributors involved in the import of Pakistani food products across the UK Midlands. Nouvo, known for supplying major supermarket chains, has played a pivotal role in integrating Pakistani food brands into mainstream UK retail. Discussions centered on improving commercial supply chains and scaling up the presence of halal-certified and ethnic food products from Pakistan in the British market.
These engagements underscore Pakistan’s intent to deepen its economic linkages with the UK through sector-specific collaboration, diaspora-led commerce, and regional trade networks. By targeting strategic sectors and building direct connections with industry stakeholders, the visit reflects Pakistan’s commitment to positioning itself as a value-added and reliable trade partner in the UK market.
