Pakistan has taken another step to attract foreign investment in its technology manufacturing sector as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan met with the Chief Executive Officer of Chinese laptop manufacturer HYF to discuss the establishment of a laptop and tablet production facility in the country. The meeting, held on Monday, underlined the government’s intention to develop a robust local electronics manufacturing base and reduce reliance on imported devices. According to an official statement, HYF is a specialized producer of laptops, fingerprint devices, and tablets, and its interest in Pakistan signals growing investor confidence in the domestic market.

During the meeting, Haroon Akhtar Khan highlighted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to extend maximum support to Chinese investors and ensure that their investments in Pakistan are secure. He reiterated that the government sees technology manufacturing as a priority sector and is working to create an environment conducive to long-term industrial partnerships. Officials believe that encouraging international firms such as HYF to invest locally will strengthen Pakistan’s manufacturing ecosystem, create skilled employment opportunities, and increase the availability of competitively priced devices for domestic consumers.

The SAPM also revealed that the government is preparing to launch a Mobile Device Policy that will cover laptops and tablets in addition to smartphones, further incentivizing local assembly and manufacturing. This policy is expected to streamline regulations and offer attractive conditions for technology firms willing to set up production facilities in the country. He pointed out that investor facilitation has been significantly improved, particularly for Chinese companies, with updated visa procedures allowing visit and business visas to be issued within 24 to 72 hours. These changes aim to remove barriers for investors and demonstrate Pakistan’s readiness to support high-value industrial projects.

To ensure smooth and timely progress on the proposed manufacturing venture, Haroon Akhtar Khan directed the Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) and the Engineering Development Board (EDB) to provide full cooperation to HYF. This support is intended to help the company navigate regulatory processes, identify suitable locations, and set up operations efficiently. The move reflects the government’s broader vision of developing an indigenous manufacturing base for laptops and tablets while strengthening ties with Chinese investors. Officials familiar with the discussions say that such initiatives will gradually build local capacity, improve technology transfer, and contribute to Pakistan’s overall economic development by fostering industrial growth and technological advancement.
