On the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has launched the nationwide 911 emergency helpline to provide urgent assistance to citizens during disasters. The initiative comes at a critical time, as heavy monsoon rains, flash floods, and cloudbursts continue to devastate northern Pakistan, leaving hundreds dead and thousands displaced. With the new helpline, citizens can directly access emergency services by dialing 911 from anywhere in the country.

According to the ministry, the service has been designed to remain operational even in areas where mobile network towers have been damaged or are temporarily inactive, ensuring that people in crisis situations can still reach out for help. This resilience is particularly vital as communication lines and infrastructure remain disrupted in several flood-affected regions. Authorities have urged the public to use the helpline responsibly and avoid non-essential calls so that the system remains available for those facing real emergencies.

The activation of the helpline coincides with the worsening humanitarian crisis across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Reports confirm that more than 250 people have lost their lives, with Buner district recording over 150 fatalities alone, while many others remain missing. Entire communities have been swept away by floodwaters, homes have been destroyed, and livestock and vehicles have been carried off by the torrents. Survivors have been left stranded with limited access to shelter, food, and medical assistance, underscoring the urgent need for efficient communication and rapid response mechanisms.

In light of the widespread destruction, Prime Minister Sharif instructed that relief goods be dispatched to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on a priority basis through trucks to support displaced communities. The government has committed to intensifying rescue and relief operations, working to provide immediate assistance to those affected. By enabling a centralized helpline that functions even during disruptions in mobile connectivity, authorities aim to ensure that no community is left without access to emergency services during this national crisis.

The 911 helpline represents a significant step in Pakistan’s efforts to improve emergency response infrastructure through the use of technology. By establishing a single, easily accessible number for critical situations, the government is working to enhance coordination and speed in disaster management. As the floods continue to affect large parts of the country, the service is expected to play a crucial role in connecting people with timely aid and ensuring that emergency resources are directed where they are needed most.
