OpenAI is reportedly working on a series of AI-powered consumer devices, including a smart speaker, smart glasses, and a smart lamp. Sources indicate that over two hundred employees are dedicated to these projects, highlighting the company’s growing focus on hardware alongside its AI research. The smart speaker, which is expected to launch first, will feature a camera designed to capture information about its surroundings and the people interacting with it. This includes recognizing objects on nearby surfaces and detecting conversations in the vicinity. The camera will also support facial recognition technology similar to Apple’s Face ID, enabling secure authentication for purchases. Early reports suggest the speaker could retail between two hundred and three hundred US dollars, with shipments anticipated in early 2027.

OpenAI’s smart glasses, entering a market currently dominated by Meta, are expected to follow in 2028, while the smart lamp remains at the prototype stage with no confirmed release date. The hardware initiative builds on OpenAI’s acquisition of io Products, the startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, for six point five billion dollars. Ive is credited with shaping Apple’s design approach for decades and is now leading the hardware design for OpenAI, ensuring the devices combine advanced AI capabilities with a consumer-friendly aesthetic. Despite the resources and experience brought in by Ive and his team, reports indicate the projects have faced delays due to technical challenges, privacy considerations, and the computing power required for large-scale production.

The AI-powered devices are designed to continuously monitor their surroundings, raising questions about privacy and consumer acceptance. OpenAI is reportedly balancing the integration of AI functionality with safeguards to address potential concerns about devices that listen and watch constantly. The smart speaker, smart glasses, and smart lamp represent the company’s first significant effort to create AI-driven consumer hardware beyond its software offerings. Analysts note that these products reflect a shift in focus from research to market-ready solutions that integrate AI into everyday life.

The smart speaker is the most immediate project and will include features to enhance user interaction through AI, while the smart glasses aim to combine visual intelligence with wearable design. The smart lamp, although experimental, could extend OpenAI’s ecosystem into home automation. The development of these devices positions OpenAI to enter the consumer electronics market with products that combine AI expertise, innovative design, and user-focused features. As these devices progress toward commercial availability, they are likely to attract attention from both the technology industry and consumers interested in AI-driven solutions for homes and workplaces.
