A collaborative effort between the Special Communications Organization (SCO) and the Aga Khan Foundation  has resulted in the opening of a new Software Technology Park in Nasirabad, Hunza. This initiative aims to promote sustainable development in Gilgit-Baltistan by providing crucial resources for the region’s tech sector.

The park offers uninterrupted power supply, high-speed internet, and co-working spaces, catering to small startups, freelancers, and established businesses. It functions as a central hub within a “hub and spokes” model, facilitating connections with other IT facilities in remote areas. This fosters opportunities for distance learning, entrepreneurship training, digital skills development, and freelance work.

Officials including the Director General of SCO, Major General Umar Ahmad Shah, and the Chairman of AKF ED, Mr Sultan Ali Allana, were present at the inauguration. Mr. Allana expressed his confidence in the park’s ability to strengthen the regional economy. He highlighted the potential for fostering innovation, creating business networks, and driving economic growth through reliable connections to local and international markets.

Major General Shah echoed this sentiment, aligning the park’s development with SCO’s vision of empowering youth through IT infrastructure. He emphasized the project’s potential to create job opportunities, attract foreign investment, and contribute to the socio-economic upliftment of the region.

The CEO of AKF accentuated Gilgit-Baltistan’s potential as a national software hub. He pointed to the park’s features – high-speed internet, reliable electricity, co-working spaces, and a scenic location – as factors that can attract domestic and international tech companies and digital nomads. This influx can significantly benefit the national economy.

The park’s launch signifies a significant step towards empowering Gilgit-Baltistan’s youth and fostering technological advancements within the region. By providing the necessary infrastructure and fostering connections, this initiative has the potential to unlock new economic opportunities and contribute to the region’s sustainable development.
