The National Database and Registration Authority has launched an updated version of its Pak ID mobile application, introducing two new features aimed at simplifying visa applications and strengthening biometric verification for users. The latest update expands the application’s capabilities in a way that is expected to make it considerably more convenient for foreign nationals seeking to apply for Pakistani visas, as well as improving the identity verification process across all service categories.

The update allows foreign nationals from 193 countries to apply for all visa categories through a more streamlined process within the app. The first of the two new features is a passport scanning function that allows users to capture or upload an image of their passport directly within the application. The system automatically extracts key details from the document, including the applicant’s name, passport number, and expiry date, removing the need for manual data entry and reducing the likelihood of input errors that can slow down or complicate the application process. This optical character recognition-based approach makes the initial stages of a visa application faster and more accessible, particularly for users who may not be entirely comfortable navigating complex digital forms.

The second addition is an enhanced biometric verification system built around facial recognition technology. The update enables facial recognition-based verification across all categories, broadening the scope of contactless identity confirmation within the platform. This builds on NADRA’s broader push toward more secure and accessible digital identity infrastructure, which has included efforts to reduce the dependency on fingerprint matching alone and offer alternative biometric pathways for users who face difficulties with traditional verification methods. NADRA has advised all existing users to update their app to the latest version and encouraged new users to download it to access these faster and more efficient services.
