Mirpur district in Azad Jammu and Kashmir is set to introduce a phased Safe City project that will integrate advanced surveillance and monitoring systems to improve urban management and safety. SSP Khurram Iqbal shared details of the plan during an interaction at the Kashmir Press Club, highlighting that the initiative will rely on modern technology to streamline police operations and strengthen community-police engagement. The project includes the installation of high-resolution CCTV cameras at strategic locations across the district, enabling centralized monitoring and rapid response.

Currently, 30 cameras are in place within the city, although only a few are fully functional. Restoration work is already underway to ensure complete operational capability, with upgrades planned to enhance coverage and image quality. As part of the broader vision for technology-led policing, plans are in motion to establish specialized facilities, including a dedicated women’s police station and community policing units. Liaison committees will also be introduced to create structured channels for communication between law enforcement and residents, ensuring that feedback and suggestions from the public can directly contribute to operational improvements.

The Safe City project will be complemented by digital infrastructure to support real-time data collection and analysis, providing actionable insights for traffic management and urban planning. Intelligent monitoring tools are expected to assist in identifying patterns and optimizing resource allocation, leading to more efficient deployment of personnel and quicker resolution of public service needs. In addition, the integration of these technologies will allow the city to adopt smart policing practices that align with modern urban safety standards.

SSP Khurram Iqbal emphasized that the initiative’s success depends on close coordination between technology, trained personnel, and the local community. He encouraged residents to actively engage with the system and share constructive input to make the Safe City project more effective. Work is also in progress on a comprehensive traffic strategy that will leverage surveillance data to improve flow and reduce congestion in key areas. The project reflects Mirpur’s commitment to adopting innovative urban safety and management solutions, positioning it among cities in Pakistan that are moving toward digitally enabled policing and smart city transformation.
