Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially launched the first batch of electric buses in Lahore, marking a historic moment for Pakistan’s public transport system. This initiative, which sees the introduction of the country’s first fully electric public transport service, aims to provide a cleaner, more efficient, and environmentally friendly commuting option for the people of Lahore. The electric buses are set to operate on one of the city’s longest and most crucial routes, making it a significant step in the city’s sustainable development efforts.
The electric buses are equipped with modern amenities designed to enhance the passenger experience. Among the key features are GPS tracking, free Wi-Fi, and USB ports for charging mobile devices, which will undoubtedly make the commute more comfortable for passengers. In addition to these conveniences, the buses also cater to differently-abled individuals, offering accessibility features such as ramps and designated seating. Each bus is designed to accommodate up to 80 passengers, with 30 seats available, ensuring ample space for all commuters.
A fleet of 27 electric buses will operate along a 21-kilometer route connecting the Railway Station to Green Town. The route will pass through several important areas of the city, including Queens Road, Mozang, Ferozepur Road, Campus Bridge, and Ichhra Canal. The buses are expected to serve around 17,000 passengers daily, providing a modern alternative to traditional modes of transport. This new service is also set to be officially launched to the public in mid-February, creating buzz and excitement among the citizens of Lahore. The buses will arrive every nine minutes, offering a high-frequency service that ensures commuters do not have to wait long.
To support the operation of this electric fleet, 42 modern bus shelters will be constructed along the route, offering a comfortable place for passengers to wait. Additionally, nine charging stations have been installed at the Green Town Hamdard Chowk depot, ensuring the buses remain fully charged and ready to serve passengers. Each electric bus has a range of 250 kilometers per charge, allowing them to complete four full routes before needing to recharge, ensuring that the service remains uninterrupted throughout the day.
In an effort to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers, special measures have been taken to promote a safe travel environment. A designated section for women will be available on each bus, and surveillance cameras will be installed on the buses and at bus stations to prevent any potential harassment or misconduct. These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive transport service for all members of society.
To make the service more user-friendly, a mobile app will be introduced, allowing passengers to track the location of the buses in real-time. This app will also enable passengers to pay their fares through digital wallets and transport cards, making the entire experience more seamless and cashless. In addition, universal transport cards will be introduced to provide passengers with an easy and efficient way to access the service.
The launch of this electric bus service is just the beginning, with several other initiatives already underway to improve public transport in the city. Training is being provided for 70 electric bus drivers, ensuring that they are well-equipped to handle the new vehicles and provide a high-quality service.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took the time to inspect the buses’ features and functionality, while Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar briefed her on the progress of the pilot project. She also took the opportunity to review plans for the e-taxi project, which aims to introduce electric taxis to Lahore in the near future. In addition, the Chief Minister directed officials to assess the feasibility of installing solar fans and water coolers at bus stands, further enhancing the comfort of passengers.
As part of her commitment to improving public transport infrastructure, Maryam Nawaz also emphasized the importance of collaboration with the private sector, particularly in the development of electric vehicle charging stations. She instructed authorities to ensure that Safe City cameras are installed at every bus stand, enhancing the safety and security of passengers while they wait for their buses.
This electric bus initiative is a significant milestone in Lahore’s ongoing efforts to modernize its public transport system and move towards more sustainable solutions. With the combination of environmentally friendly technology, modern amenities, and a commitment to safety and accessibility, the introduction of electric buses promises to transform commuting in Lahore and serve as a model for other cities in Pakistan.
