The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has introduced an artificial intelligence based virtual teacher project aimed at addressing persistent shortages of teaching staff in schools, particularly in remote areas of the province. Under the Parho Khyber Pakhtunkhwa initiative, AI generated digital versions of real teachers will deliver lessons to students through virtual classrooms, allowing schools with limited access to qualified educators to offer instruction in subjects that are difficult to staff.
The initiative will use AI generated virtual replicas based on the faces and voices of real teachers to deliver lessons covering around 2,900 curriculum modules for students from grades six to twelve. The programme will include subjects such as mathematics, physics and Urdu, with a virtual version of a teacher from Peshawar already developed for the project. Rather than relying solely on prerecorded material, the system is designed to support live interaction between students and virtual teachers. Students will be able to ask questions and receive responses during sessions transmitted from a virtual school established in Gulbahar, Peshawar. Pilot schools selected for the programme have been equipped with screens, cameras, microphones, internet connections and sound systems to facilitate the lessons.
The project is primarily aimed at schools in areas where shortages of qualified teachers, particularly science teachers, remain a concern. The government has identified regions including Bajaur, South Waziristan, North Waziristan and Bannu for the virtual teaching model. Under the proposed arrangement, technical staff will be present at participating schools while lessons are delivered remotely through the AI based system. The approach is intended to provide students with access to subjects that may otherwise be unavailable because of a shortage of teachers in their locality. The provincial government has also positioned the programme as part of its wider digital education reforms and has linked the initiative with its objective of improving literacy across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
However, the introduction of AI virtual teachers has also raised questions about the practical challenges of deploying the technology in remote areas. The Young Teachers Association Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has questioned whether the system can function effectively in locations where reliable internet connectivity remains limited. The association has also sought clarification over claims that the AI teaching system can operate offline, particularly because the virtual classrooms are designed to provide interactive responses to students. The government has approved an estimated one time investment of Rs5 billion for the initiative and has projected annual savings of more than Rs100 billion. The programme therefore represents a significant technology based approach to addressing education staffing gaps, while its implementation will depend on connectivity, infrastructure and the ability of schools to operate the virtual classroom equipment consistently.
