Islamabad is set to witness the establishment of Pakistan’s first Smart City Command and Control Center under the “Smart Islamabad” initiative. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) confirmed that the project will serve as a pilot program designed to create a fusion center for urban governance. By bringing together officers from multiple departments and integrating real-time data from across the capital, the initiative aims to deliver improved coordination and efficient decision-making for city management.
According to official documents, the Command and Control Center will provide citizens access to essential services in a single, integrated space while enabling government agencies to work collaboratively under one platform. The facility is being designed as a hub where urban services such as traffic management, environmental monitoring, waste collection, and transport regulation can be overseen in real time. Smart devices and sensors will be deployed across Islamabad to feed continuous data into the system, ensuring that government officers have up-to-date information for effective responses.
The financial outlay for the Smart Islamabad project is estimated at Rs. 708.385 million, with the Planning Division having already allocated Rs. 250 million for the initial phase. This first stage will focus on setting up the Command and Control Center, installing the required software, and training the human resources needed to operate the facility. Authorities have emphasized that the center will rely on a secure and scalable real-time data integration platform, forming the backbone for smart governance in the capital.
Officials further highlighted that the Smart Islamabad project is not limited to immediate city-level improvements but is also intended to serve as a prototype for broader national application. The government’s goal is to build an AI-powered platform that can be replicated in other urban centers across Pakistan. This replication model would allow other cities to adopt similar command and control structures for better service delivery, environmental management, and infrastructure monitoring, ensuring consistency in urban governance.
By launching the Smart City Command Center, Islamabad will be the first in the country to experience data-driven governance at this scale. The initiative reflects an increasing focus on using technology to address urban challenges, while also laying the foundation for long-term digitization of city management processes nationwide.
