The Higher Education Commission has called on universities across the country to review and modernize their degree programmes and curricula as part of a broader effort to prepare Pakistan’s higher education sector for the opportunities and challenges associated with Industrial Revolution 5.0. The initiative is aimed at building a more future ready academic system capable of equipping graduates with the skills needed for an evolving global economy.
As part of the review, universities are being asked to align academic programmes more closely with labour market needs by integrating emerging technologies, artificial intelligence and digital competencies into existing coursework. The initiative also places emphasis on building closer links between industry and academia through practical learning opportunities, along with fostering critical thinking, innovation and entrepreneurship among students as core components of a modernized curriculum.
To carry out this nationwide transformation exercise, the Higher Education Commission is working in collaboration with universities, National Curriculum Review Committees, accreditation councils, industry representatives and subject experts, with the overall process guided by a dedicated National Task Force. This multi stakeholder approach is intended to ensure that curriculum updates reflect both academic standards and practical industry requirements as programmes are reviewed and revised across different disciplines.
Universities have specifically been asked to identify emerging academic disciplines, modernize existing degree programmes, and prepare graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to take advantage of opportunities arising from Industrial Revolution 5.0. The commission described the effort as part of Pakistan’s broader transition toward a green, digital and more inclusive economy, positioning curriculum reform as a necessary step in ensuring the country’s graduates remain competitive as global labour markets continue shifting toward more technology driven and sustainability focused industries.
