The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan received a high-level delegation from Huawei this week, with HEC Chairman Niaz Ahmad Akhtar hosting a meeting that brought together representatives from one of the world’s leading technology companies to discuss the continued deepening of a partnership that now stretches back to 2008. The Huawei delegation was led by Derek Hao, President for the Middle East and Central Asia Region, and Alex Yang, Managing Director of Huawei Pakistan, reflecting the significance the company attaches to its engagement with Pakistan’s academic and digital infrastructure landscape.
Discussions at the meeting covered a broad range of strategic and technical areas central to the modernisation of Pakistan’s higher education sector. Both sides reviewed ongoing collaboration on the Pakistan Education and Research Network, known as PERN, which forms the backbone of internet connectivity for universities and research institutions across the country. The conversation extended to cloud infrastructure, high-performance computing, and advanced data systems, all of which are increasingly critical as universities move toward more data-intensive research environments and digitally integrated academic operations. Huawei also shared updates on its progress in deploying artificial intelligence-enabled classrooms and virtual teaching solutions, technologies that have gained renewed relevance in the context of improving access to quality education across geographically dispersed institutions.
A significant portion of the dialogue focused on the human capital dimension of the partnership, particularly the development of artificial intelligence talent within Pakistan. Both sides discussed ways to strengthen the linkages between academia and industry, recognising that technical education alone is insufficient without structured pathways that connect graduates with the rapidly evolving needs of the technology sector. The meeting also touched on fostering a broader and more inclusive digital ecosystem within the country, one that does not concentrate its benefits within urban centres but extends meaningful connectivity and capability to institutions across all provinces. HEC Chairman Niaz Ahmad Akhtar and the Huawei leadership reaffirmed a shared commitment to expanding collaboration and advancing emerging technologies as instruments of progress within Pakistan’s higher education sector, signalling that the partnership is expected to enter a more intensive phase in the period ahead.
