Federal government has launched new fiber optic and broadband expansion projects to deliver high speed internet access to the Sindh districts of Badin and Sanghar as part of its broader digital expansion strategy aimed at improving connectivity in underserved regions. The announcement was made by Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja during a project award ceremony, where she reiterated the government’s commitment to accelerating digital transformation and ensuring reliable internet access for communities that have historically lacked adequate connectivity infrastructure. The initiatives are being implemented through Universal Service Fund under Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, with a focus on strengthening the digital backbone needed to support economic inclusion and technology driven growth across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, the minister described digital connectivity as a cornerstone of sustainable economic development, emphasizing that expanded broadband access can create new opportunities for youth, freelancers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses seeking to participate in the digital economy. She noted that reliable high speed internet enables access to online education, remote work platforms, digital financial services, and e commerce ecosystems, which are increasingly vital for income generation and innovation. In addition to announcing the fiber and broadband projects, Khawaja highlighted the upcoming 600 MHz spectrum auction, stating that it is expected to significantly enhance mobile internet capacity and improve service quality nationwide. The additional spectrum is anticipated to strengthen network coverage, boost data speeds, and support the continued growth of e governance platforms and online public service delivery mechanisms.

During the event, contracts were formally awarded to Dancom Pakistan and Jazz for the expansion of high speed connectivity infrastructure in the targeted districts. The projects will focus on deploying fiber optic backbone networks and upgrading supporting infrastructure to ensure dependable broadband services in remote and semi urban areas. Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori attended the ceremony and praised the ministry’s efforts to advance digital transformation, acknowledging the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif in promoting technology driven development as a national priority.

Separately, the minister visited the IT facility of Saylani Welfare International Trust, where she addressed a technology focused gathering highlighting the potential of Pakistan’s youth and the growing role of artificial intelligence in shaping the country’s digital future. The combined announcements and engagements reflect a coordinated push to expand connectivity infrastructure, enhance spectrum resources, and cultivate digital skills, reinforcing the government’s objective of building a more connected and competitive digital economy.
