Google has announced a major expansion of its Google Translate platform, adding 110 new languages, including Balochi. This significant update is part of Google’s “1,000 Languages Initiative” aimed at fostering global understanding through advanced AI and language models.
The expansion, which benefits over 614 million speakers worldwide, is the largest in the platform’s history. It includes a wide range of languages, from major global tongues to those spoken by indigenous communities. A quarter of the new languages added are from Africa, reflecting Google’s commitment to linguistic diversity.
Balochi, a Northwestern Iranian language spoken primarily in Balochistan, is among the newly supported languages. It is the principal language of the Baloch people and has several dialects. The language is written in the Arabic script and is known for its rich oral literary tradition.
Google Translate’s continuous expansion and commitment to representing diverse languages underscore its role in bridging linguistic gaps and promoting cultural exchange.
