Google Photos has added a new layer of creative fun with the launch of Me Meme, an AI-driven feature that allows users to generate personalized memes starring themselves. Officially announced on Thursday, the feature is currently available to U.S.-based users on both iOS and Android platforms. Me Meme enables users to combine their own selfies with either Google-provided templates or custom images to produce unique meme content directly within the app.

The process is straightforward. Users can access the feature through the Create tab in Google Photos and select Me Meme to begin. First-time users are greeted with an introduction screen and can tap Try Now to get started. To generate a meme, users simply select a template, upload a selfie, and hit Generate. The AI then merges the photo with the chosen template, producing a fresh image. After generation, users can save the new image to their library, share it to other platforms, or tap Regenerate to see an alternative version.

Me Meme is powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology, specifically a model named Nano Banana. This model has already been employed in other creative tools within Google Photos, including features that transform images into cartoon or painting styles. Google notes that the feature is experimental, and results may vary depending on the quality of the uploaded photo. Well-lit, focused, and front-facing selfies tend to yield the most accurate and visually appealing memes. The company also plans to expand the template library over time, giving users more options to customize their creations.

Beyond its entertainment value, Me Meme serves a strategic purpose for Google Photos. By offering a playful way to interact with personal images, users are encouraged to remain within the app rather than seeking similar AI tools elsewhere. Features that include the user’s likeness have proven popular in other applications, such as OpenAI’s Sora, which allows people to appear in AI-generated videos. Originally spotted in development last October by Android Authority, Me Meme is now officially rolling out, with Google confirming that all eligible users will gain access over the coming weeks.

The feature highlights how AI continues to integrate into everyday mobile apps, offering both entertainment and engagement while reinforcing user loyalty. Me Meme not only provides an easy way to create shareable content but also demonstrates Google Photos’ ongoing investment in AI tools that blend personalization, creativity, and accessibility. Interested users can explore the feature by updating their Google Photos app and navigating to the Create tab for the new experience.
