Afghansat1: Afghanistan’s First Satellite in its Testing Phase
KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology (MCIT) has successfully launched Afghanistan’s first satellite ‘Afghansat1. It has been placed in the orbit and is in test phase.
Previously named Eutelsat W2M, the satellite was launched after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the MICT and Eutelsat.
The Afghansat-1 satellite supports a wide range of services including broadcasting, mobile telephony backhaul and IP connectivity. This launch will help the broadcast system in the country along with bringing multitude channels from other regions and countries including Turkey, UAE, Pakistan & India. It has a planned service life of 15 years.
The satellite will soon be officially launched by President Hamid Karzai.
Bring EU and Pakistan closer: Launch of Horizon 2020 Programme
Islamabad: EU and Pakistan aim at bringing the two regions closer in the field of Science and innovation. Developments in RnD will be made focusing on sectors such as energy, climate change, agriculture, biotechnology, safety and security. These views were shared with the public in an awareness seminar on EU’s Horizon 2020 programme. The event was attended by Acting Ambassador of European Union (EU) Pierre Mayaudon and Federal Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid, jointly organized by NUST and EU. Zahid Hamid said on the occasion that such collaboration will enable Pakistan to access knowledge-based international markets. If the opportunities offered by GSP+ are rightly availed, it could help boost Pakistan’s economy. This awareness seminar on Horizon 2020 was termed as the bridge of science between Pakistan and EU.
Advanced Treatment Technologies for Cancer Patients Now Available in Pakistan
ABBOTABAD: Stereo-tactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) has been recently introduced in Pakistan to help patients fight cancer. SBRT uses high end technologies to target cancer cells and kill them while keeping the healthy tissue safe. The two day course organized by International Energy Commission (IEA) and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) will enable students and medical practitioners to learn about the use of this advanced technology. At the inauguration ceremony Dr. Nadeem Abbasi the coordinator for SBRT programme in Pakistan stated that the scientists will be able to work on better technologies for combating this fatal disease using nuclear technology for live saving purposes.
