CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 40 million copies sold worldwide, marking a major milestone for the action RPG nearly six years after its troubled launch. The achievement represents one of the most remarkable redemption stories in the gaming industry, with the title transforming from a heavily criticized release into one of the best-selling role-playing games of all time. The sales figure includes copies sold across all supported platforms as well as the Ultimate Edition, reflecting the game’s sustained popularity years after release.

When Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020, it faced widespread criticism due to technical issues, performance problems and bugs, particularly on older console hardware. Rather than abandoning the project, CD Projekt Red invested years into improving the game through major updates, gameplay overhauls, quality-of-life improvements and continuous technical fixes. The release of the Phantom Liberty expansion further strengthened the game’s reputation by delivering a critically acclaimed story expansion alongside significant gameplay enhancements that revitalized player interest.

The game’s resurgence was also supported by the success of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, which introduced new audiences to the franchise and drove a significant increase in player numbers. Combined with regular updates and expanded platform support, the franchise has regained the confidence of both longtime fans and newcomers. CD Projekt Red has credited the community’s continued support as a key factor behind the game’s enduring commercial success and growing player base.

The 40 million sales milestone provides strong momentum for the future of the Cyberpunk franchise, with CD Projekt Red already developing a sequel alongside other major projects. The success demonstrates how sustained post-launch support and long-term investment in quality improvements can restore player trust and transform a challenging launch into a lasting commercial and critical success, cementing Cyberpunk 2077 as one of the industry’s most notable comeback stories.
