China has announced that it will send a Pakistani astronaut on a short-term space mission to the Tiangong Space Station, marking a defining moment in Pakistan’s journey toward human space exploration. The announcement, made by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) and reported by state media Xinhua, highlights deepening scientific and technological cooperation between China and Pakistan. This will be the first time a Pakistani astronaut travels to space, an achievement made possible through years of collaboration in aerospace research and development.
According to CMSA, two Pakistani astronauts are currently being trained alongside Chinese astronauts at the Astronaut Centre of China. Following this training program, one of them will be selected to participate in a short-duration mission as a payload specialist aboard the Tiangong Space Station. The astronaut will take part in various scientific and experimental activities while on the mission, representing a new chapter in Pakistan’s participation in international space endeavors. This collaboration reflects growing confidence in Pakistan’s scientific capabilities and its expanding engagement with global space technology initiatives.
The space mission is the outcome of a cooperation agreement signed earlier this year between the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and CMSA. The agreement laid the foundation for joint efforts in astronaut training, space research, and technology sharing. It also strengthens long-standing bilateral relations between the two countries, extending their collaboration beyond traditional areas like infrastructure and energy to advanced scientific domains. Officials stated that the astronaut selection process began in April 2025, with candidates evaluated on rigorous physical fitness, technical expertise, and psychological readiness.
Pakistan’s participation in this mission symbolizes a significant advancement in its national space ambitions. For years, SUPARCO has focused on satellite development, space research, and international collaboration, but sending a Pakistani astronaut to space marks an entirely new frontier. This partnership with China not only elevates Pakistan’s position in the global space community but also inspires future investments in scientific education and research at home. The experience gained through this collaboration will help build local expertise in astronautics, space engineering, and mission control operations, potentially paving the way for future independent initiatives.
The joint mission also represents China’s broader vision of promoting inclusive participation in its manned space program, extending training and research opportunities to partner nations. As Pakistan prepares for its first astronaut to embark on this historic journey, the mission underscores the growing strength of Pakistan-China relations and highlights how technology cooperation continues to shape the region’s future in science and innovation.
