Prime Minister Imran Khan has spent the previous year highlighting the importance of technology and the need of the country to adopt the way technology has been revolutionizing various sectors of the world. One of his major focus is to establish a tech hub for the country to promote innovation and the Prime Minister has recently reportedly the go ahead to the MOITT to establish a 40-acre software city in Islamabad.
The Prime Minister recently held a meeting with various high ranking officials from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MOITT) to explore ways to strengthen the IT sector of Pakistan. The Prime Minister has expressed interest in the effort to escalate the country’s IT exports to $10 billion. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MOITT) have gone on to explore ways to strengthen the IT sector of Pakistan and in this recent meeting with the Prime Minister, PM Khan made vital decisions for the ministry with the hope that that it would help increase IT exports in the long run.
The biggest and most significant decision of the meeting is the establishment of a software city that is planned to be set up in Islamabad. Planned over a 40 acre area, the software city will be the host for tech companies and startups that will be facilitated with state of the art facilities at the area. Other decisions made in this meeting was that the federal government will soon launch a relief package for small scale software exporters to ensure they can grow and prosper as well. Moreover, PM Khan has also tasked the MOITT to abolish the double tax imposed on software exporters by both federal and provincial governments. It was also decided that small scale software exporters will also be provided foreign currency at a lower rate than the market rate. Other decisions included digitally connecting all HEC recognized universities in Rawalpindi and Islamabad to make it more convenient for students and the universities will be required to buy software developed in Pakistan to facilitate the local tech sector.
